“Built for a private K-12 school that was frustrated with expensive handbook SaaS (HTML-in-a-textbox editing, no collaboration) and Google Docs (no real TOC, weak formatting, poor search).”

Handbook SaaS charges schools per editor for a textbox. This one runs on a $5 server and the school owns every page.
Overleaf wants $25 a month before your co-author gets track changes. Aldine is the whole collaborative LaTeX editor in two containers, and nothing in it has a price.
“Most need a paid subscription service to enable proper collaboration, are clunky, and shove distracting non-features in your face.”
Overleaf charges by the head for Git sync and the rest of the good parts. Ayakaleaf Pro bolted the Pro features onto the free edition and handed the server back to your lab.
“Overleaf subscriptions can be expensive, especially for research teams.”
Slack bills you per head, per month, forever. Deft puts chat, tasks and notes on your own server and bills you nothing.
“This started with three things: wanting Slack to do more, a growing resentment of SaaS bills, and getting slightly too obsessed with self-hosting.”
